2021 Expanding Batteries in 2016 Macintosh Laptop (this page created 12/4/2021)

A Macbook Air from 2016 had the batteries expand, distorting the case.  Here are some pictures of what happened.  Click on any picture for the highest quality original.
 

Below is a picture of the laptop as "closed" as it can be closed.  The expanded batteries inside prevent it from closing any more.

Below you can see it isn't "right", it isn't sitting on the desk flat, and the keyboard is higher in the middle than on the sides.

Time to open it from the back!

Once the back is open, the laptop itself flattened out quite a bit, and the bulging batteries are even more noticeable.
