On April 22nd Katherine and I went to scout out Mt Aggie, which is well known to be the very best ski resort anywhere in Texas. Technically it is the ONLY ski resort in Texas. It is very exclusive, and hard to get lift tickets to Mt Aggie but I explain below some choices you have. There really isn't much info online about Mt Aggie so I'll try to document the process of getting lift tickets here. Most of the photos below you can click on the photo to get a gigantic zoomed in "original" version with greater detail.
The first picture below is a map of the drive from Austin to Mt Aggie ski resort which is in "College Station" in Texas. It takes 2 hours and it's a nice easy drive.
Below is one picture with labels to get your bearings at the Mt Aggie Ski Resort. The summit of Mt Aggie is about 20 feet above sea level. There are no lifts or rope tow, at Mt Aggie you "earn your turns" by hiking up to the summit. As you can see below, there are two separate sets of stairs, one parallel to the ski run itself, and one perpendicular to the ski run from the Mt Aggie Ski Lodge. The ski resort entrance is near the ski lodge, and there is parking about 20 yards away. Oh, to answer a common question, the "snow" is a special artificial turf that is colored white and designed to be skied on.
Below here is a YouTube video (not mine!) which gives a "tour" of the lodge facilities and the ski hill. And there is more info here: https://peap.tamu.edu/snow-skiing/
Below is a photo of the Mt Aggie ski resort entrance. There are two important parts of this: 1) the security system is a $4 "Master Lock", and 2) this is the only section of the perimeter fence without barbed wire. If you want to ski here, one idea would be bring bolt cutters and cut the Master Lock and walk in. That seems easiest to me. Now this is very important... Don't be a jerk, you really should pay for your lift ticket! A lift ticket at the Vail ski resort in Colorado costs $325 this year (2025). So I would suggest leaving the cut Master Lock in a clearly marked box, and $329 cash in the box, and a note explaining $4 is for the lock you cut off, and $325 is for the lift ticket. It is very luxurious to have a ski resort in Texas and we don't want them to get rid of it because people are taking advantage. And if you see the state of the "snow/ski-slope" it is clear it has costs to maintain properly. Don't be a jerk, this isn't about getting free ski runs in. Be respectful and pay the lift ticket!
Below is a "front on view" of the Mt Aggie ski slope. The ski lodge is over to the right. You can see they have lights setup for night skiing, but I'm not sure how to get them to turn on.
Below I'm standing back further for a panorama that includes the Mt Aggie ski resort, and the perimeter fence around it. Most of the perimeter fence has barbed wire at the top.
This sign is hung at one place on the perimeter fence. I never saw it anywhere else, just at one lone spot. The sign says: "THIS FACILITY IS FOR HLKN CLASSES ONLY. NO TRESPASSING VIOLATORS WILL BE PROSECUTED." The letters "HLKN" stands for "Department of Health and Kinesiology at Texas A&M University." You can see how to sign up for ski classes on Mt Aggie here: https://peap.tamu.edu/snow-skiing/
That's it! All done!
